Did you know it's National Poetry Month? I (Kelli) used to write a lot of poetry, especially in college. It was a lot of angsty stuff inspired by bad boyfriends or break-ups. I wanted to try my hand at writing a poem again, although I am so content now in mycomfortable little family life that I couldn't find much angst to fuel my writing. I did find myself mildly resentful that the routine montony of my life as a housewife stifles the creativity that used to come so easily to me... so that's what I wrote about. Here's my poem, and a challenge for all you mothers out there to write one too! (Dads, you can write a poem as well, but not
Josh because when I gave him this challenge he came up with a wretched "love" poem that alluded to my graying hair)
Creative Rebirth by Kelli Price
Sure, I have created.
Three times, all boys --
Tired, hungry, beautiful boys.
And now creativity is forgotten,
Smothered
under plotting, planning, scheduling
ways to get more
sleep
Tossed beneath
stirring, measuring, pouring
little bellies have to
eat
Starved,
discarded, pushed aside
the one thing I can't
feed
Buried under
washing, drying, folding --
and that constant ache for
sleep
Planted in my mind
among rich old memories,
and decay is soon
devoured,
ideas Creep out:
nourished, crisp, and green.
Thoughts are now
awakened,
words Burst
through dim dull routine
and this mom is
ravenous to create again.

Pretty good Kelli. I don't know if I will have the courage to give poetry a try. It's hard enough to find a few spare moments of mental privacy to remember that I even need to go to the bathroom.
I like it, Kelli! Good job!
I LOVE IT!!! Read Good Poems by Garrison Keillor--I think you'd really love it.
