Time to get a little nervous, my seminar was at 13:00 hours (Chile uses military time, only they don´t call it that, but for you civillians at is 1 pm). I have been eating lunch at that hour so i tried to eat a late breakfast so i wouldn´t get hungry during my presentation. I have been drinking 2-3 cups of chocolate milk every morning, can you say heaven?
As I came to my office in the late morning to get ready, i realized that my office computer didn´t have the new power point, and when i converted my presentation to the old format, there were some things that needed to be corrected. This turned out to be nice because i was not able to think about what was about to happen.
I walked over to were the seminar would be, it was a in a new building (with air conditioning, thank goodness). I was given an hour, but had material for 1.5 hours. Luckily there were not a lot of questions (which could be seen as a bad thing?) so time was not an issue. There were some good questions and it was a very good group. I thought it went really well and i can honestly say i did not make a fool of myself.
Afterwards I had coffee with the faculty. There are two choices of drink here in chile: coffee or coca cola. So i have been living on the later. But instead of diet coke, they have coca-cola light. Two faculty here are US born, but have been in Chile for the past 30+ years. But everyone speaks english, for such my presentation was all in english. But the coffee break was my time to show that i could speak spanish. Once again i didn´t make a fool of myself (but then again i may have said something that meant something else and the other participants may think me a fool).

In the late afternoon i went to Nunoa, my sector while i was in the office. Many families moved to the US, coincidentally the same time i finished my mission. But the houses i went to either no one was home or they were not ni alli conmigo. So after walking 2+ hours in the heat i did the next best thing. I shopped for cars. There are a whole lot of brands that are not in the US, and so i wanted to get some info. The thing i found out is this, almost all cars in chile are compact. Which means our hope of three car seats in the back may not work. So either McKay goes commando (as in no car seat) or we have to get creative.
I went to dinner with some faculty members. This is the time to wine and dine. Since i don´t drink wine, see the picture above. I guess you could say it was time to coke and joke (that sounds like a mom joke, cheesy and kind of lame, not mom, but the joke). There were three junior faculty, all graduated the U as master students at the same time. It was a delicious seafood restaurant. They were very easy to talk to and i learned a lot about the department in this conversation, and got a lot of good research ideas.
I came home and was exhausted. I felt like day 1 of interview process went well. I made no inapropriate jokes, did not trip over my shoelaces, and drank lots of coke. Not a bad day, and all that coke made me pee like a race horse (p.s. toilet flushes counter clock wise, check which direction yours flushes).

Just flushed the toilet and it goes counter clock wise as well.
CHEESEY AND KIND OF LAME????
At least you are getting all the coca cola you did not get as a missionary. I remember that with most of the toilets you couldn't flush the toilet paper and I would forget every single time. Do you know how awful it is to be scooping it out as fast as you can as the water goes counter clock wise down the drain? I am glad you are having a great time. Hope your interviews went well. Jeg elsker dig.
