Step 3: The soil. I would say the dirt but when you grow up near the Svedin household, you know that it is called soil, unless it is behind your year. Then, and only then, can it be called dirt. We turned to facebook nation, family members, and the world wide web to get the perfect combination.
So here is what we did:
21 bags of top soil (.75 cu. ft) - $1.24 each
5 bags of compost (2 cu ft) - $2.67 each
6 bags of cow manure (.75 cu ft) - $2.34
8 bags of peat humus (.75 cu ft) - $2.64)
We unloaded the bags into our garage. Then we hired a local youth to carry them to the back yard and unload them into our box. "Best $10 every spent" says Josh's back.
Kids loved helping out, especially playing in the poop.

After about an hour we were done, and our garden was looking ready to plant the seeds. Now we are off to buy seeds. What to plant?

My big plan was to build some of these at the new house before the season really started, but I think it might have to wait. I'm SO glad someone I know has done it before me. Questions: What about your sprinkler system? Did you poke holes in the tarp to allow drainage? Did you read that Square Foot Gardening book?
I am SO JEALOUS! I told Darrell that it makes me just a little jealous when I hear about our friends buying houses (especially ones with kitchens bigger than our whole apartment), but it makes me REALLY jealous when I see my friends having their own gardens.
May your harvest be plentiful...and plant some beets for us!:)
Crystal: 2 things: I can't believe you know the Ures of noisy toddler fame. Such a small Mormon world. I feel so bad for them - I'm glad Dave hooked them up with some legal help. And we didn't poke holes in the tarp to allow drainage - maybe that's a whoops? I didn't read the book - yet. Probably should have done that before jumping the gun. The Texas A & M Cooperative Extension has an awesome gardening website and I've just been using that. We will let you know how it goes so that you can learn from our Texas garden mistakes.
Amy: We will plant some beets and ship them to you.
You will not be jealous of us in July when you are sitting pretty at the Michigan farmer's market eating fresh veggies while our beets are withering in the 110 degree sun! :)
