First Day of School

McKay started kindergarten on Monday! I can't believe my baby is in school. He doesn't love it; we pretty much knew he wouldn't because it doesn't involve Lego Star Wars.

And the school did sort of lose him the first day when I wasn't in the right place to pick him up, which was all sorts of traumatic for all of us, and that includes Spencer and Matthew who had to walk 10 min. to the school, wait for 20 minutes while we waited for school to let out (I wanted to be early), wait for another 30 minutes while the school searched for my son, and then the 10-min walk home. All in 105 degree, hellish Texas heat. What a hot mess.

At McKay's school there are specific places you are supposed to pick up your child (none of them being inside their classroom, unfortunately), depending on whether your kid is a walker from one neighborhood or another or in one grade or another, etc. Anyway, I wasn't sure where to pick up McKay and so I asked... and was given the wrong information by 2 different people. I was then told by a third person that because I missed him when he came out of the school he was probably sent to walk home on his own across 2 very busy streets, which sent me into a fit of hysterics. As soon I started screaming at people to "find my son" they began looking for him... and found him like 30 minutes later. Apparently someone found him crying in the halls and carried him to the office, where I picked him up and did not let go of him for the rest of the afternoon. Amazingly he went back the next day, but he now has persistent and realistic fears about being lost or being put in the wrong place at the end of school every day. Poor guy!

He doesn't like to tell me about his school day, but I bribe it out of him. Some of the funny things he has said include: he has made a friend, but can never remember his name (I think it's Daniel). He says Daniel is the biggest boy in the class. McKay always makes friends with the biggest kid in the class, be it boy or girl. Smart kid.

I overheard him talking with Matthew today. Matthew: "When I go to kindergarten...." McKay: "Hmph. Well, by the time you go to kindergarten I'll probably be in college!"

Tonight as I was putting him to bed: "I only want to go on PE days."

Kelli, I would have died if that had happened to one my twins the first day of school! Oh. My. Gosh. Worst parents nightmare. Glad he went back to school the next day! Scott and Madeline start 1st grade the day after Labor Day. Scott has incorporated Star Wars as much as he can at school. Every picture he drew for a while centered around it.:)
