Miss Amy

We have stumbled upon what we think is Keller, Texas's best-kept secret: Miss Amy of Flips for Fun gymnastics/backyard swim lessons. Matthew and McKay have been taking swim lessons from Miss Amy for a week now, & they have learned more in 4 days than they have in all the other swim lessons we've had them enrolled in before now combined. My theory on why my kids can now swim is that Miss Amy is a gymnastics coach, and she is used to pushing kids who are scared of doing things out of their comfort zone.... and she is very good at it. Her answer to McKay and Matthew's water anxiety is a firm but friendly head dunk with a brief warning of "don't open your mouth," followed by a lot of positive reinforcement and fun. And Spencer and I get to watch it all go down in 105 degree weather for an hour and a half each day. At least the kind people who own the pool are awesome and provide a Crystal Light and slushy machine for us. Free slurpees make it all worth it.

In McKay's video you can see that he hasn't quite figured out how to swim using his arms yet - but he's got the basic concept down. And Matthew - well, he always puts forth a good effort. Let's just say I'm not going to be throwing him in the deep end anytime soon, but at least I don't have to hear him whine everytime he gets splashed in the face with water anymore.

I'm glad that the boys are getting a hang of swimming. They may be ready for the passing of the famous speedo.
