Home Improvement

Between watching my dad work around the house and watching Home Improvement on tv as a kid (along with those saturdays in college when Gary would watch This Old House with Norm Abrams), I decided to do a little home improvement.

Okay, so it really wasn't a true project, but baby steps. I mean let's get real for a second, I am no Dusty but I am not Joey either (sorry Joey, I know that you agree in specialization and benefits of trade).

There were three projects on hand:

1) Install washer and dryer.
This involved connecting the washer, not difficult at all. But the dryer presented a few more issues. I bought a tin foil tube (or whatever they are called) to connect the dryer to the wall. But when i went to plug it into the wall, I noticed a slight problem. The outlet in the wall had four holes and the plug had three. So I was off to the hardware store to but a new chord. I then replaced the chord with a Binford 2000 dryer chord, which not only decreases the energy used but it also increases the speed at which the dryer rotates, leaving no kid who gets thrown in the dryer disapointed.

2) Fix the fridge door.
I bought a really nice fridge off craigslist for super cheap, but after being home I noticed that the fridge door doesn't seal completely. There was a small gap which let a little cold out. This would not do, so i begun pulling the door off (It is actually quite easy and i wish i would have known that as a youth, I could have had some fun doing some pranks on siblings). I raised the fridge door with a washer then screwed everything back together. Mission completion.

3) Connect water to fridge for ice maker
I bought a little kit to do this, but the instructions were not very helpful. They must have been written for Norm Abrams or Dusty (someone who know about these kind of things). So i did my best to follow them and added some of my inner Tim Allen into it (grunt grunt grunt). It was all connected and it was the moment of truth. I turned the water on...SPLASH. Water went spraying everywhere. I tried to fix it with no luck. After a while, with the occasional curse word (they are acceptable in auto mechanics and home repairs, FYI) I decided i would leave this for the home teachers. Seriously, once they show up, I am pulling that fridge out and hoping they know what they are doing.

So 2 out of 3 ain't bad. In fact that would put me into cooperstown.

Next week its time for the lawn. Sprinkler system, lawn mower, and the new Binford 4500 gas powered trimmer, with the same amount of horse power as a deisel engine, this should be good.
